Understanding Breech Positioning in Pregnancy — and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Pregnancy is a period of amazing change — physically, hormonally and emotionally. As your body adapts to nurture your growing baby, everything from your posture, pelvis and spine to your ligamentous tension and nervous-system tone is in a dynamic state.

One topic that many expecting mums worry about is the baby ending up in a breech position (i.e., bottom or feet down rather than head-down) late in pregnancy. While many babies naturally rotate into the optimal head-down (vertex) position, sometimes they don’t — and that can raise questions about labour, delivery and comfort.

In this blog we’ll look at:

  • What breech positioning means and why it may occur

  • How pelvic/spinal tension, alignment & nervous system factors can influence baby’s position

  • What we do at Connect Chiropractic to support mums-to-be (and their babies) toward optimal positioning

  • Practical tips expecting mothers can incorporate alongside chiropractic care

What is breech positioning — and why does it matter?

In simple terms, a baby is said to be in a “breech” presentation when the buttocks or feet are positioned to deliver first rather than the head. There are a few types of breech: frank breech (buttocks down, legs up), complete breech (buttocks down, legs folded), footling breech (one or both feet down).

A breech presentation becomes more of a concern in late pregnancy (for example after 34-36 weeks) because the baby may have less room or ability to turn, and labour logistics may differ.

Why the baby might stay breech or fail to turn:

  • Pelvic misalignment or restricted pelvic space – If the mother’s pelvis is tilted, rotated, or there is tension in the pelvic ligaments, the baby may have less room to manoeuvre.

  • Spinal or sacro-iliac joint dysfunction – These may influence how the uterus sits, how the baby moves and the gravity vectors available.

  • Uterine-placental factors – For example placenta location, uterine shape or amniotic fluid level (though these are obstetric factors, and your OB/GYN will monitor them).

  • Maternal posture & habit – If the mother habitually leans to one side, sits for long periods in unsupported positions (especially late pregnancy), or has restricted hip/pelvic mobility, the baby may favour a non-head-down orientation.

  • Nervous system / muscular tone – The nervous system controls muscle tone, ligament tension and joint function, which all affect how the pelvis and uterus shape up.

When a baby remains breech, it may mean changes in delivery options, increased likelihood of external cephalic version (ECV) procedures, or even a planned caesarean section — plus increased maternal anxiety. So it’s understandable why many women ask: “Is there anything I can do to encourage the head-down position?”

How chiropractic care at Connect Chiropractic can support optimal baby positioning

At Connect Chiropractic in Christchurch we have a dedicated antenatal chiropractic programme designed for expecting mothers — including a special chiropractic table that allows comfortable face-down positioning even deep in pregnancy.

Here’s how our care helps:

  1. Pelvic alignment and mobility

    • Our expertise is aligning the pelvis and sacro-iliac joints, removing restrictions that may reduce the available space in the lower abdomen and pelvis.

    • A well balanced pelvis gives the baby more room, and increases the chance of rotation into the head-down position.

    • At our locations we utilise the recognised Webster Technique for optimal pelvic alignment during pregnancy.

  2. Spinal and neural-system balance

    • By reducing interference in the nervous system (via gentle adjustments), we help ensure the mother’s body is as relaxed and functional as possible.

    • A more relaxed nervous system and less tension means the uterus can assume a more favourable orientation.

  3. Functional support for the uterus and internal environment

    • It’s not just about bones and joints: when the pelvis and supporting ligaments are aligned and mobile, the uterus can sit in a more open, balanced way.

    • This “open up the space” concept gives the baby more opportunity to turn.

  4. Regular checking & preventive care

    • We recommend regular antenatal chiropractic checks throughout pregnancy — not only when there’s discomfort.

    • Early and regular visits means we can intervene before irreversible “stuck” positions set in.

  5. Comfort, pain-relief & confidence

    • Even if the baby is breech, we help with maternal comfort (back pain, hip ache, pelvic girdle pain).

    • And through alignment and education we help mothers feel confident they’re doing everything possible for themselves and their baby.

Practical tips you can integrate alongside chiropractic care

While we see pregnant mums regularly at our Christchurch clinics (Ferrymead & Central City) for professional support, you can also adopt daily practices to increase the chance of optimal baby positioning:

  • Forward-leaning pelvic posture: Sit in a forward-tilted way (e.g., on a birthing ball, leaning forward onto arms) rather than leaning backward into your hips.

  • Pelvic floor & glute activation: Gentle glute squeezing and pelvic floor awareness help balance the lower pelvis.

  • Open hip stretches: Gentle stretches like child’s pose (arms extended forward), hip circles on hands & knees, gentle lunges.

  • Avoid prolonged slouching or tilting: Use supportive seating; avoid asymmetrical leaning.

  • Stay active (under guidance): Walking, gentle prenatal yoga, swimming help maintain mobility and circulation.
